Why Write-A-Thon? You think like a writer!
The writer’s genetic inheritance and her or his experiences shape the writer into a unique individual, and it is this uniqueness that is the writer’s only stuff for sale. —James Gunn
Everything that happens to you is material. (Heck, everything that happens to anyone who you remotely know or whose conversation you’ve overheard is material!) You write stuff down on random pieces of paper and napkins and sometimes, when you don’t have paper, you jot notes on your bed sheets. When someone tells you a wrenching story, you say, “That might make a good novel.” When life goes wrong, you write about it. When things go well, you write about it. You write. That’s what you do. So, sooner or later, you are going to write a book. It’s inevitable. Why not do it now? Sign up for National Novel Writing Month. Or do your own write-a-thon and use the next month to create a collection of poetry, a nonfiction book, or a play. Just write.
Need more inspiration? Come to the Write-A-Thon launch party tomorrow night, October 18 at 7:00 PM, at Boswell Book Company. I will be reading from my brand new book, Write-A-Thon: Write Your Book in 26 Days (And Live to Tell About It) and giving away prizes. Oh yeah, and I ordered a big cake for the event.
