Wednesday Writing Prompt: Label Poems

Yesterday, while sitting in the chair at the hairdressers, I had plenty of time to contemplate the warning labels on her hair dryer and curling irons. Warning: Do not immerse in water. Warning: Do not leave plugged in. Warning: This product can burn you.

Several years ago, I had the privilege to teach writing with a group of teachers from the Milwaukee Writing Project. We invited the students to create label poems, using product labels as a model. The students created poems about themselves based on content, warning, and how to prepare labels. When finished, the students pasted their poems on boxes of cereal.

Your turn. Using a label or sign to inspire you, write a poem. Use it to describe you, a pet, a relationship, a situation, or anything else you can dream up! Feel free to leave your poem or a link to it in the comments section below!
