The Power of Rest
by Rochelle Melander
“If you get tired, learn to rest — not to quit.” —Banksy
In the past few weeks, I’ve spoken to quite a few writers who are overwhelmed. They’re struggling to stay hopeful with the constant barrage of bad news, worried about how AI will impact publishing, and finding it difficult to focus.
When I feel overwhelmed by either life or writing, I tend to dig in and try harder. Maybe you can relate: Can’t figure out what happens next in the novel? Stare at it until a plot emerges. Wondering how to boost business? Spend hours surfing freelance writing websites until you’re dizzy and even more discouraged. Not sure how to focus social media efforts? Look at everyone’s shiny, happy photos on Facebook until you’re truly depressed.
Tricia Hersey, author of Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto, writes:
“Rest makes invention and imagination accessible. Rest gives us the ability to test our freedom. Our souls are calling to see differently. To move differently. To feel differently. To rest. Rest as a subversive act. The deepest act of resistance.”
So instead of working harder, we might take Hersey’s advice and rest.
This week, create a rest plan.
+Make a list of the activities that you know restore your energy. From napping to walking to reading, record anything that might support your mind, body, and spirit.
+Ask friends and colleagues what they do to restore their energy.
+Block out time each week to rest.
+Follow through. REST. The chores will wait.
Remember, dear writers:
“You don’t have to always be creating, doing, and contributing to the world. Your birth grants you rest and leisure as well.” ― Tricia Hersey
