Request: What’s Your Favorite Writing Book?
In yesterday’s blog post, I wrote about one of my favorite writing books, If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland. Every Tuesday, all summer long, I’ll be blogging about the lessons I’ve learned from reading about writing. (If you want to get these lessons in your inbox, you can subscribe to the blog or sign up for the Write Now! Tips.)
The best advice. I have stacks of writing books on several shelves spread around my office and home. I’ve just ordered another book about writing from my favorite indie bookstore, Boswell Book Company. Early this morning, I paged through old books and journals, looking for the most helpful nuggets of writing advice. In the midst of my search, I discovered something. The writing books I’ve most enjoyed throughout the years, came through the suggestions of friends, colleagues, and clients. Then I thought of you.
I need your help. Dig out your most-treasured writing book. Search for your favorite piece of advice, information or encouragement and write a few paragraphs about it (no more than 500 words). Send it to me via email (with writing book in the subject line) anytime between now and August 31. Include your name, contact information including your email address, a short bio, and a link to your web site or blog. I’ll feature the best posts in future Write Now! Notes and on the blog.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
I have two favorites. “On Writing Well” by William Zinsser and “On Writing” by Stephen King. Both are worthy of multiple re-reads. I will scan the worn pages for my favorite passages to share.
I love the King book, too. I’d love to hear your advice from Zinsser. That’s not on my list yet, though it is one of my favorite books. Thanks, Kelly!
