Book Review: One Was a Soldier
In 2003, I devoured the debut mystery novel featuring the Rev. Clare Fergusson and Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne, In the Bleak Midwinter in just a few days. With Spencer-Fleming’s latest Fergusson/Van Alstyne mystery, One Was a Soldier, I am taking my time. Maybe it is because it’s been two years since the last book (I Shall Not Want), and I know I’ll probably have to wait another two years for the next one. Maybe it’s because my life is busier. Both are true, but here’s the real reason I’m not rushing: I’m afraid I’ll miss something.
In One Was a Soldier, Spencer-Fleming unfurls a complex plot involving an international military crime, reveals the complicated lives of military men and women returning to small-town America, and explores the various effects of post traumatic stress disorder on veterans. In addition, Rev. Fergusson and Chief Van Alstyne work on moving their relationship from love affair into a more stable, full-time gig. Wow! That’s a lot to take in. I’m looking forward to seeing how Spencer-Fleming weaves together all of these plot lines into a satisfying ending.
If you have not yet read Spencer-Fleming’s series, start from the beginning. You have an amazing rollercoaster ride in front of you. If you’ve been reading all along, go to your favorite local bookstore or library and pick up this riveting new book. You have a great weekend read in front of you!

I have loved this series ever since you introduced me to it, Rochelle. I think, of all the women pastor/priest detectives, she might be my favorite, although the priest in Michelle Blake’s three (and why only three?) books comes close. Sadly I see her book tour for this new book comes no where near the Midwest. Thanks again!
